Artist Statement
I find rabbits to have a visually expressive nature. Across diverse media, the rabbit is often represented as being either adorable or horrific. If they have long limbs and sharp teeth, they are terrifying. If a rabbit is depicted with a round body and soft fur, they are endearing. This dichotomy fascinates me. I position rabbits in many poses in ceramic sculpture, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. To make the animals feel human, I use non-local or unnatural colors, textures, along with our body language and gestures.
“Watching” is a clay sculpture based on a character I created. They are depicted here with large eyes and hiding behind a hood.
